We are back to feature another beautiful red Spearmint by Cation Designs!

click picture for source

Does this picture remind you of anyone famous? I’m not telling! Cation Designs shares some coat inspiration with you over on her blog post…click over for the big reveal!

click picture for source

The coat looks fantastic whether it is worn open or closed!

click picture for source

She also talks about the giant pockets being a little too big for her and suggests a fix! It is a great idea and an easy fix if you prefer the pockets slightly smaller.

Are you starting to agree with me about how wonderful the red Spearmints look? (See here and here) The truly perfect, neutral, dressy coat.

Cation Designs used hair canvas interfacing in her collar as recommended by the pattern and pressed it into shape and it looks wonderful with the wool fabric. The key to the collar is to use wool and hair canvas…it may seem like it will be too thick but trust us, it produces the best results! Even with melton wool!

The best part? I got to see this coat in person! Cindy wore it to the San Francisco meet up a couple weeks ago! And Seamstress Erin wore her Gunmetal! Leila also had on her Spearmint….it was a Lolita Patterns party!

Lolita Patterns | Cation Designs Spearmint and Seamstress Erin Gunmetal

I had such a great time at the meetup and met some wonderful ladies and I can’t wait to go back and do it again!

The new year is almost here and that means that the Limited Edition Three Pack will be gone soon! It also means the Gunmetal sew-along is almost here! Do you have your fabric all picked out yet?

See you there!

Today is my birthday!  I woke up this morning and decided it would be fun to have a 12 hour sale for my birthday. I’m thinking 31% off all physical patterns? What do you think? It is crazy to think I am 31 years old right now…the last year just flew by! So many exciting new changes kept me so busy that I barely noticed my birthday coming up. It is easy for it to get lost in the shuffle since it is around the holidays and things get crazy.

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

Have you ever had a hard time setting in a sleeve? You get puckers no matter what you do? I’m going to show you how to ease your sleeve head before you even set it into your sleeve, giving you more control and a smoother fit, even on hard to ease fabrics.

Materials

Tie interfacing- Take your pic of any of the materials below to ease your sleeve head. Just make sure you match the weight of your fabric to the material you want to use to ease. All are cut on the bias.

  • Go to a thrift or vintage shop and get an old tie.
  • Ask your brother/husband/boyfriend for an old tie.
  • You can also use self fabric
  • Bias strip of lambswool
  • 100 weight polar fleece
  • Armo Rite (aka tie interfacing) or Armo Weft
  • Bias strip of linen
  • Weft interfacing
  • Bias cut lightweight gabardine (100% wool)

The sleeves you’re inserting

The coat/jacket you’re making

Instructions

First, I’m going to show you how easy it is to pull the interfacing out of an old tie. There will be a running stitch down the middle of the tie interfacing. Pull that out and your interfacing will be free to use. You’ll get several strips out of one tie so keep the left overs for your next jacket or coat project!

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing  Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

Cut two pieces that measure 1″ by 12″.

Starting at the first easing marking, (or seam if using a two-piece sleeve) place your bias strip down on the wrong side and stitch. There is no need to back stitch.

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

Start to pull your bias strip as you sew with a long stitch just inside your stitching line.

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

Your bias strip will get narrower. This is exactly what should happen.

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

The strip will gather your sleeve head once you’re done. You can now steam press your sleeve head with the heat/steam necessary for your fabric. Only press the seam allowances. Now you should have a slight lift in the sleeve head that will allow you to insert the sleeve into the armhole with ease.

This is what my zebra print sateen coat looks like mid construction. I used a bias cut strip of linen in my coat.

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

From this side of the sleeve, you can see how the bias strip will plump up the sleeve head.

Lolita Patterns | How To Easily Set In Sleeves Using Tie Interfacing

Insert your sleeve and flip over to see your smooth results!

Enjoy!

Today’s feature is another Spearmint made in red. I don’t know about you, but I am starting to feel like the red ones make the perfect dress coat, it is almost like the red is a neutral. The perfect, goes with everything, neutral, red, dressy coat. Hahaha…so many things that should contradict each other in that last sentence but nope…it is exactly right.

This Spearmint was made by Lady Katza of Peanut Butter Macrame. Check out how well her hair color goes with the coat! Love!

click picture for source

I love the popped collar pictures…it really shows how dramatic the collar can be!

click picture for source

Click over to Lady Katza’s blog post to see what she loves about the pattern, and what she will change next time.  She was very helpful while testing this pattern because she helped me realize that the pockets were way too low..(see her pic on the blog) and that the sleeves were too long. Guess what? Thanks to her and all the other testers, those are all fixed in the final pattern!  That is why pattern testers are so crucial to getting the best pattern possible to the printer. The final version has pockets in a much better place and the sleeve length has been corrected.

Tomorrow we have a great tutorial popping up on the blog that will help when you make Spearmint. All the tester versions of Spearmint have not been featured yet, but we will take a break for a couple of days to get some other posts up, specifically the tutorial and to announce the Sugar Plum contest winner!  Fear not! More Spearmints will be featured soon…..

The pre-sale is over and Spearmint is officially released and shipping!  Thank you all for the support in the pre-sale phase..your orders are on their way. The sale price for Spearmint may be over, but you can still save when buying the Limited Edition Three Pack. The official release of Spearmint also includes the release of the PDF version of Spearmint. One word of warning: This is a long coat and therefore the PDF pages end up being fairly lengthy. Not impossible of course, the testers braved the PDF version!

Now for the exciting feature Spearmint. Pretty Grievances made a dressy suiting version of Spearmint and she nailed it! Check it out!

She chose a fun lining and gives us a good shot of the sizable pockets.

You all are in for a treat today! We have Scruffy Badger’s Spearmint coat, complete with ric rac! One of the things Scruffy Badger is known for is her classic and elegant use of ric rac. It always makes her garments so unique and she wasn’t about to leave Spearmint out of the loop!

click for picture source

That teal is to die for…and look at this gorgeous floral lining!

click for picture source

She discusses tailoring, fabric challenges (she ran out!), and that awesome collar she added ric rac to over on her blog post at Scruffy Badger Time. Her fix for running out of fabric is nothing short of brilliant! It looks so incredible, I want to do the same thing on my next version. What was her clever fix you ask?  Click over to her blog and find out!

I wanted to show you the close up picture of the collar so you can see how pretty the ric rac looks inserted into the edge of the collar seam. She has a lot more pictures in her post at the blog, including closeups of the buttonhole and other full length shots of the coat!

That’s it for today’s Spearmint. And yes, we have another for tomorrow!

I am so excited to finally be launching Spearmint! This is our last pattern of the year, and has been such a fun project. Spearmint is perfect for this time of year!

Lolita Patterns | Spearmint Envelope Front Spearmint line drawing

Spearmint is a beautiful coat with a romantic lolita twist. Spearmint is a stunning option when fashionable outwear is needed. A gorgeous oversized flounce collar cascades around the neck while one statement button holds the coat closed. The coat is fully lined with princess seams that provide shaping and in seam pockets to keep your hands warm. View A is designed to hit at the knee. View B is a longer winter version and hems at mid calf.

This coat works best as a transitional/topcoat. I wear it over dresses for a night out or over a blouse. If you want to wear layers to add warmth for very cold weather, you will definitely want to size up as this is designed as a topcoat. We will make sure and cover all that during the sew-along. This coat is perfect for the weather right now, and will be great to transition into Spring.

Lolita Patterns | Leila's Spearmint

Leila’s Zebra Print View B

Spearmint is available now for pre-sale!  The physical pattern will ship one week from today, on Monday, December 16th, 2013. This is the same day that the PDF version will be available. For this week, while Spearmint is on pre-sale, it will be 15% off the regular price. After the pre-sale is over, the only way to save on Spearmint is to get it as part of the Limited Edition Three Pack Set for the holidays.

Lolita Patterns | Limited Edition Three Pack Set

The Three Pack Set has the physical versions of Sugar Plum, Gunmetal, and Spearmint bundled together for $52 which is more than 15% off the full price!  This deal is only around for the holidays so snap it up quick.

Lolita Patterns | Leila's Spearmint

Both views of Spearmint require 1 1/4 yard of fusible hair canvas. Fusible hair canvas can sometimes be difficult to source so we have provided the fusible hair canvas at a great price so you can get what you need in one order.  The hair canvas is sold here if you want to grab some for your Spearmint!

Lolita Patterns | Leila's Spearmint

Let’s talk details!  The sew-along will begin on Monday, February 3rd, 2014. We will cover every question you might have about making this coat. Spearmint uses an awesome technique to bag the lining completely by machine. No hand sewing required! Every step will be covered in detail with plenty of photos. We will even have a video to show you for better clarity!  This is an excellent pattern to use if you have never sewn a coat before. The factory style finish means the entire coat it sewn only by machine. You can use this technique on future lined garments for a great, quick finish.

Lolita Patterns | Leila's Spearmint

close-up of flounce collar

We had some wonderful testers who really helped perfect and refine the pattern before it went to print. You will see their versions popping up around the web during the next week. This coat looks truly fantastic on every single tester. It isn’t often you see something that really looks great on everyone who wears it but I swear this pattern does!

Lolita Patterns | Leila's Spearmint

These last three patterns were released quickly, with one right after the other. Now that these three are out, we will be changing back to a more regular (i.e. sane) pace. We have some gorgeous patterns planned for the new year. Things work so far ahead of schedule–we already have a pattern being released next August being drafted right now!

A quick summary: Spearmint is beautiful and available for pre-sale now at 15% off! This sale price only lasts until next Monday when the patterns ship.
